Why Does the Jolly Librarian Hate My Cell Phone?

Posted by: JollyLibrarian on: April 8, 2009

Sometimes students want to know why we ban cell phones in the library. Is it that we hate cell phones in general? Not at all. In fact, everyone on staff (except for Charles) has one, and most staff members can be found on theirs at some point during their breaks and lunch.

Still, there is one major problem with cell phones in the library. Many NSCC students are trying to work in school, families, and jobs. They have very few opportunities and spaces for quiet time to study. The library is one of the few places that offers such space. Therefore, it is mandatory that noise be kept to a minimum here. Cell phones have become so ubiquitous that most of us don’t realize how distracting they can be to others in the area, especially when they are trying to concentrate on an assignment. But they are very distracting.

There are almost no places that are reserved for quiet any more. The library is one. Help us keep it that way!
