The Monday Motivator: Donate Your Clothes!

If you are like me, this past warm weekend encouraged you to put away some winter clothes and get out the spring ones. Spring is a good time to give your wardrobe a once over and give away those clothes that you no longer wear.

With the current economy, many charities are reporting higher demand but fewer donations.  So you can reduce clutter in your own home while helping someone else at the same time.

Here are some tips for cleaning out your closet:

  • Look at clothes that you haven’t worn in several months. Chances are that you’re not going to wear them again.
  • Do you still have clothes that you hope will fit again someday when you lose (or gain) weight? Wouldn’t they be better off being worn by someone who needs them? Besides, if you’re like me, you might have also outgrown some of those clothes mentally as well as physically. I had a party dress with a giant bow on it that I was saving in case I needed to go to a party. Then I realized that a fifty-year-old woman  has no business going anywhere in a dress with a giant bow. I gave it away.
  • Try the habit of “one thing in, one thing out.” I do this with shoes, clothes, and books (my own personal collecting nightmare). When I buy a new pair of shoes, for example, I have to give a pair away. No exceptions.

Keep in mind: Clothes can make a real difference in how we’re perceived. By giving away an old suit, you might give a person the opportunity to be dressed appropriately for an interview. Those running shoes that you never wear just might make a teenager ‘cool.’

So this week, clean out your closet and donate your clothes!

  1. I was touched by your note:

    Thanks for the reminder. PG

P.S. I have on my winter clothes, still… Guess, I’ll retake a look in the mirror before coming in tomorrow….
