In 1996, April was designated Poetry Month by the Academy of American Poets. I’m guessing that many people make it through the entire month without knowing this, but not at Nashville State. We love our poetry here.
For the past 8 years, I’ve celebrated poetry month with the campus. I send an email asking who wants a daily poem delivered to their in-box. Each year, I have anywhere from 50-100 participants. At the end of the month, I get thank-yous and responses asking if I can do it everyday.
We also have a poetry month exhibit in the library, showing off poets and anthologies. This year, we’ve also added copies of individual poems for students to read and take with them.
It is also in April that our campus’s literary magazine, Tetrahedra, is published. Students, faculty, and staff all contribute, and the reception is one of the highlights of the year.
So join me this month in celebrating poetry. To get you started, here is a link to today’s poet, Kay Ryan: “Turtle.”
